Parakeet Bird Cages – Tips on Selecting the Proper Cage
The parakeet has been called America’s most popular pet, so parakeet bird cages are plentiful. However, some products sold by pet stores as appropriate for this pet are not large enough, nor are they equipped to keep your pet bird healthy and happy. Here are some things to look for when selecting the correct cage for your pet.
[1] The size of the environment is important to maintain a healthy living environment. The minimum size for one bird is 16 X 16 X 16 inches; two birds is 20 X 20 X 20 inches; add 4 inches for each pet you have over two.
[2] Make sure that bar spacing is no wider than 1/4 inch so that your pet can’t put his head between the bars and become choked.
[3] Horizontal bars allow him to do his favorite thing--climbing.
[4] Avoid doors that move up and down as your pet may learn to open it and the door falls on his head or other body part.
[5] Zinc is deadly to birds, so choose a home that is zinc-free.
These birds should be allowed to fly in a room every day, but if you are too nervous about letting your pet out, a large flight aviary is available for sale wherever parakeet bird cages are sold.
